Seen in Journalism: our mission
We are a group of journalists committed to accuracy and impartiality in reporting news and debate around sex and gender.
Seen in Journalism is committed to reporting the sex and gender debate truthfully and fairly, challenging misrepresentation and myth, and supports and is aligned to the principles of other SEEN networks in the UK in upholding the protections related to sex set out in the Equality Act 2010 .
Many journalists came to this issue not through activism of any kind, but because they felt that their primary function of telling the truth to their audience was being undermined. Some have suffered professional repercussions for trying to do so.
is committed to the protected belief that sex is binary and immutable, and to the belief that journalists have the right to report this issue with integrity and honesty, upholding the first principles of our profession, without suffering disbenefit or loss.
We are not aligned to any political party or advocate for any position except for accurate and impartial coverage based on reality: the facts that sex is binary, immutable and based on reproductive role. We are all committed to free speech.
We provide support to one another and campaign for evidence-based coverage.
Accuracy
We communicate ideas, and engage in debate, based on clear and accurate definitions. We uphold the legal and scientific definition of sex and sexual orientation. We recognise that sex is binary, immutable, determined at conception, and based on reproductive role.
Evidence
Facts matter. Our approach is to consider the evidence and to curate a range of views around the facts.
Independence and Impartiality
We engage with organisations and publications with diverse political views and are committed to free speech. However, we do not, and will not, forge links with or accept funding from any organisation that does not share our values or whose aims we consider to be fundamentally hostile to accuracy and impartiality.
Collaboration
We work collaboratively, standing together, sharing information, and building connections with like-minded groups and individuals, curating community and resilience. We do not attack individuals. We do not condone, endorse, or encourage any abusive or discriminatory behaviour towards any group or individual.
